Clinical Need Approximately four million people in the United States have a genetic predisposition to lipid disorders, such as familial hypercholesterolemia, familial combined hyperlipidemia, polygenic hypercholesterolemia, and low levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Approximately 10% of these patients do not respond to current drug therapies, such as statins. If untreated, disease progression can lead to morbidity and mortality from heart attack or stroke.
